Highlights
- In the second quarter of 2022, there were 27,675 vacant positions in the Capitale-Nationale administrative region and 13,550 in the Chaudière-Appalaches region. This is an increase of 16% in the Capitale-Nationale and 46% in Chaudière-Appalaches compared to the same quarter in 2021.
- In both regions, this is the highest number of vacant positions registered for any quarter since this data has become available (2015).
- The job vacancy rates—7.6% in the Capitale-Nationale and 6.7% in Chaudière-Appalaches—were also higher than the Quebec (6.4%) and Canadian (5.9%) averages.
- On average, the hourly wage offered for vacant positions was $22.25 in the Capitale-Nationale and $21.95 in Chaudière-Appalaches. The hourly wages offered in the province of Quebec and Canada were $22.80 and $24.05, respectively.
- Workers in “Sales and service occupations” and “Trades, transport and equipment operators and related occupations” were the most in demand in both regions.

Commentary
These new estimations from Statistics Canada’s Job Vacancy and Wage Survey (JVWS) reflect the labour market situation during the second quarter of 2022 as the region was starting to return to normal with the lifting of the last public health measures related to COVID‑19 (end of the mask mandate in June 2022).
The data shows that the number of vacant positions in the Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches regions reached an all-time high compared to the same period in the previous years. In the second quarter (Q2) of 2021, there were 23,800 vacant positions in the Capitale-Nationale region (compared to 27,675 in Q2 2022) and 9,295 in the Chaudière-Appalaches region (compared to 13,550 in Q2 2022).

The latest data from the Job Vacancy and Wage Survey show the region’s labour market dynamism and the effect of labour shortages. The number of vacant positions has reached a record high, and this phenomenon seems to be also affecting the Chaudière-Appalaches region more than before, with a 46% increase in the number of vacancies.
