The CEO's Column: Local Businesses in Global Media (September 2022)

Days are getting shorter, the sun has lost some of its warmth, rush hours are once again rush hours… Fall appears to be at our doorstep! While many have used the summer to recharge, Québec City’s business world continued to shine on the local, national and international scenes.

After a summer break, I am happy to be back with another edition of my monthly column to highlight the work of local businesses that stood out outside the province in the past few months.

ROBEX

ROBEX RESOURCES is a Canadian mining company that does gold production and exploration in West Africa. The company, whose headquarters are located on Grande Allée in Québec City, made two big announcements in the past few months. First, their team has found a sector with very high potential as part of their Kiniero project in Guinea. A few weeks later, ROBEX announced the completion of the hybrid solar power plant at the Nampala gold mine in Mali, a project conducted with Vivo Energy that will supply carbon-free power to the mine.

SQUEEZE

For the second year in a row, Squeeze, an animation studio with offices in Québec City and Montréal that is already well known on the international scene, has received a Silver Telly Award in the category Branded Content – 3D Animation for its work with Finnish video game developer Supercell. This award highlights the studio’s exceptional work on the Magic Items cut scene in the video game Clash Royale.

The Telly Awards reward the world’s best in television and multimedia production, with over 10,000 projects submitted each year to a jury from all areas of the entertainment industry. We can be proud of Quebec’s creativity!

BIOMARK DIAGNOSTICS

In June, Québec company BioMark Diagnostics, which develops proprietary, non-invasive and accurate cancer diagnostic solutions that can help detect, monitor and assess treatment for cancer early and cost effectively, has signed an agreement with Icahn School of Medecine at Mount Sinai in New York City for a research collaboration related to early diagnosis of lung cancer in at-risk populations. This partnership could help provide nearly 16 million Americans with screening tests for lung cancer.

AN ACTIVE SUMMER IN THE QUÉBEC CITY REGION

Summarizing all business activity that happened over the summer in Québec City in just a few lines would be an arduous task, so I thought that I could end my September column with a rapid-fire list of events and news that have marked my summer. Let’s start with the unique Festival d’été de Québec which, after selling all 125,000 of its passes no less than 75 days before the venue, has brought tremendous life to the heart of Québec City in the beginning of July.

The return of this major event has no doubt contributed to the return of vacationers in our hotels, like Auberge Saint-Antoine, Fairmont Château Frontenac and Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu, which stood out on the international scene by making the prestigious Travel + Leisure Readers 2022 list.

Finally, I would like to highlight the great success of the first Rendez-vous d’affaires de la Francophonie de Québec, a new event organized by Québec International, in collaboration with the Québec City Convention Centre and Québec Destination Affaires. The event attracted over 430 participants from 14 countries from July 4 to 6.

This column could continue for many pages, but I must stop here for now. Once again, congratulations to all these businesses that are making the greater Québec City region shine all around the world. It is my genuine pleasure to see the success of our local business sector, and you can count on Québec International to continue contributing to its growth.

Please continue to share stories of local businesses that made the news abroad at info@quebecinternational.ca. I would be happy to share the news in my future articles.

Have a great beginning of fall!

President and CEO, Québec International
