Demographics - Report and outlook 2023 - 2024

Each year, Québec International’s Economic Studies team sheds light on various important economic indicators in a publication called “Report and Outlook.” In addition to analyzing the previous year’s data, the economists consider the current context and medium- and long-term forecast scenarios in order to form a solid opinion of the changes to be expected. Québec International is therefore pleased to unveil the Demographics section of this document, which looks at the evolution of the population.

Summary

The demographics report for 2023 provides a detailed analysis of population growth and the trends observed in the Québec City census metropolitan area (CMA). This growth was mainly driven by international immigration, which greatly contributes to the population increase. The population grew significantly, notably experiencing positive net migration with the other CMAs in the province of Quebec, especially Montréal. Despite a drop in natural increase, the Québec City region remains attractive for residents, especially for young adults of working age. Finally, demographic projections emphasize the aging of the population for the decades ahead.

Highlights

Population growth is on the rise compared to 2023

  • Total population in 2023: 880,875 residents, increase of 22,275 inhabitants
  • A historically low birth rate of 8.9‰

A demographic increase from international immigration

  • 0.9% of the overall population growth came from natural increase
  • 11.7% came from net intraprovincial migration
  • 88.4% came from net external migration

Most of the population growth in 2023 came from young people

  • +3,258 young people aged 15 to 24, the double from last year
  • +11,895 people aged 20 to 64
  • +6,073 people aged 65 and over

Conclusion

The remarkable demographic increase recorded in 2023 in the Québec City CMA testifies to its sustained attractiveness to residents, including immigrants. Québec City’s growth was more modest than other major Canadian CMAs like Montréal, Toronto and Vancouver, yet it remains significant. The region continued to attract a younger population in 2023, experiencing positive net migration with every other region in the province of Quebec, thus strengthening its demographic dynamism. Despite the sharp drop in natural increase, international migration played a crucial role in the population growth. Looking at demographic projections, it is evident that the aging of the population will continue, requiring adequate planning to meet the needs of the different age groups. Overall, the data shows that the Québec City CMA remains an attractive place for living, working and studying. The demographic rebound in 2023 brings hope that the region will be able to address the demographic challenges of the coming years.
