The CEO’s Column: Local Businesses in Global Media (September 2024)

For many, summer is a time for resting, but it is not the case for the Québec City region’s business community. Several businesses and organizations were featured in local, national and international media. Here are some examples.

A birthday cake for Barbie

The company Grazy created a product in honour of Barbie’s 65th anniversary. This three-year agreement with Mattel has already provided great visibility to the local vegan and allergen-free frozen dessert brand.

Businesses are investing in the Capitale-Nationale region …

Yoga Fitness opened its second location in Ste-Foy this summer, inside the Pyramide. This project required an initial investment phase of $1.2 million. Additional rooms will be added shortly to host yoga classes, while the current space of over 8,000 square feet is currently used for spinning and fitness. This will allow the company to offer 300 new classes.

Qualinet is investing $5.4 million to expand its headquarters to accommodate around 60 new employees. The company also hopes to expand its operations to other provinces in the coming years. Qualinet has grown significantly over the past several years, due to the increased number of weather-related disasters.

… and elsewhere in the province and the country!

The tire retailer and auto mechanic shop Pneus Ratté celebrates its 90th anniversary with the opening of its third location in Montréal following the acquisition of Pneus et rechapage Southward, thus strengthening its presence in the metropolis.

Restos Plaisirs is also set to open its first location in the metropolis, with the opening of a Cochon Dingue restaurant. The local business is now a member of Grandio Group, which brings several growth opportunities. The new establishment will be the first one outside Québec City, but surely not the last!

Founded in 2012 and specializing in pool and spa repairs, renovations and maintenance, H2prO intends to double its locations in the coming years. The SMB would like to expand to Ontario and open new locations in the province of Quebec.

Expansion is also on the horizon for Chocolats Favoris, who announced the opening of its second shop in Western Canada, this time in Vancouver. Dominique Brown, the owner, confirms that the company intends to open more locations in British Columbia in the future.

Support for startups in the water technology sector

Quebec’s very first venture capital fund for startups in the water technology sector was created: the Cycle H2O Fund. The sum of $30 million, invested in part by Investissement Québec, will be managed by Cycle Capital and the Québec City company H2O Innovation.

Louis Garneau Sports takeover

The company founded in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures Louis Garneau Sports has just been bought by the Montréal company Lolë, ensuring that it remains in the hands of Quebec stakeholders.

Closing of financing rounds to promote growth

UgoWork, a technology company specializing in high-performance lithium-ion power solutions for the material handling industry, has concluded a $51 million financing round led by the Fonds de Solidarité FTQ. This investment will allow the company to continue to grow and innovate in its sector.

The biopharmaceutical company Feldan Therapeutics announced the extension and closing of a US$21 million financing round co-led by Genesys Capital and the Fonds de Solidarité FTQ. The money will be used to complete a study for a non-invasive treatment for the most common form of skin cancer.

New releases from our video game studios

Looking at the video game sector, our local studios once again demonstrated their expertise on the international scene. During the global video game fair Gamescom, Yellow Brick Games, Imugi, Beenox, Gearbox and Ubisoft Québec took the opportunity to reveal their new creations, developed in whole or in part in Québec City.

Distinctions for Québec International

Good news for Québec International, which recently received a total of six distinctions. Not only is it the only Canadian agency to have been featured in the “Canada’s Best Locations” list by Americian magazine Site Selection for 18 years in a row, Québec International also illustrated itself during the International Economic Development Council’s (IEDC) Annual Conference, bringing home four prizes, including one for the Metropolitan Economic Zone (ZEM). QI was also named the Economic Development Agency of the year in the Global Excellence Awards 2024 by Acquisition International magazine.

Finally, congratulations to Prévost for celebrating its 100th anniversary!
